Residential Treatment Facilities and the
Sanctuary Model

Astor Services' therapeutic residential living quarters are grounded in the principles of the Sanctuary Model. Implementing this approach for children in Astor's Residential Program is part of a long-term effort to create a healing community.
In a therapeutic residential program incorporating the Sanctuary Model, children and families who have been injured by trauma and/or chronic stress can flourish, and staff members who are affected by their exposure to trauma and the stress of their jobs can cope and do better work.
Trauma and chronic stress interfere with the healthy development of our capacities for positive relationships, realistic thinking, emotional management, and using language to work through and solve problems. Many of the children in our care reflect this — challenged in their relationships, ability to manage emotions and effectively communicate to get needs met and problems solved. Our staff members view children through this 'trauma-informed' lens and guide them to negotiate interactions in order to develop and strengthen attachments.
Children And Residential Experiences (CARE) Philosophy

The focus of our training for direct-care staff is the cutting edge CARE curriculum/ philosophy, which teaches staff to use the power of nurturing, supportive relationships to teach children the skills they need to be successful in the community. CARE incorporates "best practice" in child development, trauma-informed care and family-driven care in order to create a residential treatment environment that supports children's strengths and lets them build on their successes.
