May is National Foster Care Month and to raise awareness, Astor employee Anne Marie would like to share her experiences as a foster parent and adoptive mother.
As a foster parent, I can say Fostering is not for the faint of heart; it’s for unselfish hearts and it’s also WORTH the heart-investment! Fostering has to be about what’s best for the child, as it’s the child that matters most! We began fostering our daughter Marie 3 months old and instantly loved her. We embraced her as a part of our family and assured her biological parents we loved her, that we were honored to take care of her for them. Over the course of her case, her parents came to realize they were unable to meet her needs, so they made the very difficult decision to surrender their parental rights once they understood that we would adopt her and be her forever family.
Fostering, and adopting through foster care is redeeming and there’s the potential to ease the biological parents’ feelings of loss. Connecting with our daughter’s biological parents, achieving a supportive relationship with them gave them the comfort level they needed. In establishing a bond with them, they were able to redeem their loss and proactively make an adoption plan for her. The best outcome for the child in care has to be foremost in everyone’s mind, and if that can be achieved minimizing the child’s family’s experience of loss, then so much the better!
So, God blessed that broken road of infertility as we not only grew our family thru foster care, but we were also able to do significant damage-control and assuage her biological parent’s feelings of loss and involve them in developing her adoption plan. She will be grown up one day, and she’s incredibly empathetic: knowing her parents weren’t devastated by her loss and weren’t left feeling powerless will be very important to her.
