Recreation, Expressive Arts, and Wellness Programs
At Astor, learning does not stop at the end of the school day. Our Recreation and Expressive Arts Program offers children an unparalleled array of activities to help children discover their strengths, skills, and hidden talents.
The goals of our Residential Recreation Program are to help children gain a sense of mastery and to expose them to expressive arts, basic sports skills, team play and outdoor/nature-based activities. The program builds self-confidence and helps kids develop skills they can carry with them for life.
The joy and exhilaration in recreation activities also serve as a release from life’s stressors. Seasonal swimming in our outdoor pool and special “Wellness” events are always exciting highlights of the Recreation Program.
We are proud to highlight our partnership with Bard College. (Bard is a New York State private liberal arts college in near-by Annandale-on-Hudson, NY .) Each semester we have between numerous Bard students teaching skills to children in Astor’s Residential Program.
Children’s opportunities for exposure to new activities are limitless.

Residential Care Child Nutrition Program
Our food service program aims to foster optimal wellness and healthy eating habits. Our kitchen staff and New York State Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist consultant create a varied, child-friendly, healthy menu of three daily meals and three daily snacks.
Our nutrition consultant also provides individualized counseling for children with special dietary need. Our school wellness program actively engages the children in learning about the importance of physical activity and healthy eating habits. Additionally, wellness activities are reinforced by our Recreation Department.
