From Lava to Dating Alicia Keyes

Sure, it was in the spirit of the season and we could just as easily tell you he had learned the lesson of giving, but we think there was something else going on here. This child was giving back to Astor, telling us how important the school is to him. It was his humble way of saying thank you.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

I was rather taken by something Laura Pensiero owner of Gigi’s Trattoria in Rhinebeck said the other day: “Food tastes better when it’s shared.” That goes right to the point of the Pilgrim holiday we’re about to celebrate.

And it goes right to the heart of all that they’re trying to accomplish with the annual Thanksgiving feast for the children and staff of Astor. When goodness, caring and warmth are shared, we are all the better for it.

Bringing together as they did last year, Laura will be donating a freshly cooked locally sourced turkey dinner with all the trimmings so that the children (and staff) who cannot be with their families this Thanksgiving can share in the abundance of the Hudson River Valley. And, we’ll be happily joined by Gigi’s supporter and partner, Sean Eldridge of Hudson River Ventures.

Sharing of course, is what Astor is all about. Sharing a healthy meal and …

Antique Appraisal Event Brings in the Professionals!

A Recap of Astor’s 1st Annual Antique Appraisal Event

At the moment I alighted from my car in the parking lot of the Alumnae House at Vassar College on Saturday, they were there! The pros had arrived with treasures!

Astor Services for Children & Families held their annual Hudson Valley Reception this year to honor Jan Weido, a beloved member of the Astor staff, with the monies raised to fulfill his dream of building a bicycle path for the children at our Rhinebeck residence.

For those guests who came to the Antique Event just to peek into the past, there was a terrific silent auction with prices more in line with today – something for everyone. Dr. David Crenshaw, Astor Board co-chair had a skip in his step as he left the Alumnae House with a ceramic bowl made by Jan Weido, his win in the silent auction.

We Came to the Astor Cabaret

What A Great Day for Astor!

At 1 pm. Saturday on a perfect spring afternoon, friends of Astor Services for Children &  Families poured into the Convent of the Sacred Heart where over 170 people were gathering around a silent auction, munching hors d’oeuvres, sipping cocktails and waiting for the doors to open for the 2nd Annual Come to the Cabaret to benefit the Lawrence F. Hickey Center for Child Development.

Come to the 2nd Annual Astor Cabaret

Join Magee Hickey and her Singing Newscaster Colleagues

For the second year in a row Magee Hickey, along with her newscaster colleagues will be singing, dancing, and generally trying to trip the light fantastic for a good cause – The Lawrence F. Hickey Center for Child Development.

At our 1st annual Come to the Cabaret we filled the auditorium to capacity, standing room only.  As each newscaster mounted the stage, we were regaled with their extraordinary virtuosity that had little resemblance to their on camera appearance.  This year two dozen newscasters will once again perform their very own brand of entertainment.  We thank them for becoming “Astor Angels” for a day!

Why people are still talking about the Public Policy Breakfast

“Changing the Odds, One School Day at a Time” w/ Dr. Mark Katz

What was it about the 9th Annual Astor Public Policy Breakfast that kept people thoroughly engaged during Dr. Mark Katz’s (all too brief) presentation, Children Who Fail at School But Succeed at Life?

The secret sauce for this great event – an affinity for Dr. Katz; a real life story that engaged the audience;  a touch of humor and a positive spin on a subject we all can relate to.  And we wanted more!  That is why people are still talking about the 2012 Astor Public Policy breakfast.
